All About Cyprus
Welcome, this page and site will supply you with general information about Cyprus, from medical care, tourist information, currency, camp sites, youth hostels and public holidays to who to ring to find out the arrival times of planes at the airports.
If someone in a far off land tells you something about Cyprus, please check before you act upon it. We get calls all the time from people who are for example stuck in Athens because ' someone told them there was a ferry to Cyprus from the port of Piraeus. this was true some years ago, but now we have to send them all the way back to Italy to get on a ferry which again passes Athens, but where they are not allowed to embark or disembark ! Now that is very Cypriot.
Also. The fact is, that if you travel via the North, you can have big problems. It happens all the time and the majority are ok, but it is not officially allowed, so if you are a trouble magnet - don't say you weren't warned.
You will find the navigation bar to other parts of the site at the bottom of the page, where there is tons more to choose from.Cyprus is known by many names; The actual meaning derives from the word for copper, Kubris - mainly for the copper which was mined here but partly possibly from the colour of the land itself, which has a coppery hue, especially at sunset.

Cyprus Airport Information
Phone the numbers below from anywhere in Cyprus to obtain the latest flight information, this means you don't need to wait at the airport so long, they have an ETA on most flights into both Larnaca and Paphos airports. Press 2 when prompted for the information in English, if you miss it, you will have to listen to it in Greek.
If you want to take a transfer from the airport to your hotel or accommodation, try booking with Cyprus car hire, the prices are from 1 5 people 6 -11 and 12+ with room for your luggage. Less stress and not as expensive as you would think.

The Bus and Service Taxi
Buses in Cyprus do not all look like this, but these are my favourites. Services are pretty regular from all towns, and from Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos you can get a service taxi , which is usually a diesel 6 seater Mercedes to any of the other main towns. You can board these from service taxi offices, or call them up and they will pick you up from where you are staying and drop you where you are going. The cost for this service is generally less than 10 Euros.
Normal taxis are not expensive , and each has a meter installed, typical across town charge.. around 10 Euros See transfers from Cyprus car hire.
If you want to hire a bus like the one in the picture (known locally as a chicken bus) for special outings or maybe as wedding transport, look here.
Cyprus Banks and Currency
There are many banks in Cyprus and they all change foreign currency and travellers cheques. The rate of exchange is usually slightly better in Cyprus than in your local bank at home. There is no restriction on the amount of cash you may bring in, however amounts over 15,000 Euros should be declared, this means that if you do not spend it all, you may re-export it without hassle if you come from outside the European Union.
The up to date regulations for the importation of currency, gold and coins.
The exchange rates obviously fluctuate on a daily basis, but as a rough guide the British pound is worth around 1 euro and 20 cents (2008), there are 100 cents to a Euro. i.e. 100 sterling = 120 Euros. If you wish to see today's live exchange rates on The Banking page press this button:
All hotels and many shops will also change money for you if you get stuck, although the rate will not be as good as a bank so check before you change.
All major credit cards are accepted, and there are many hole in the wall facilities, normally with a 200 - 400 Euros a day restriction.
Banking hours are generally: Monday- Saturday 8.30am -12 pm but many banks have an afternoon service for tourists.
If you wish to buy a holiday or second home here, see Banking for advice and loans information. Also we have a new service offering preferential rates for amounts over 5000 sterling, useful when purchasing property etc. Please inquire here, or take a look at this.
